Tips for preventing Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

While prompt treatment of urinary tract infection makes it low risk, it can develop into a more serious issue if not managed. If left untreated, the disease often spreads to the kidneys causing irreversible damage or reducing their function. Please take UTIs seriously and find a good urology clinic in your area to prevent long term health issues caused by ignoring a UTI.

Urinary Tract Infection

Note that urinary tract infection could affect any part of your urinary system, including the bladder, kidneys, and ureters. However, the urethra and bladder are usually the most affected. Common symptoms of the infection include frequent urge to urinate, pain while urinating, cloudy urine, or even blood-stained urine.

The good news is that you can reduce your chances of developing this condition by following these tips:

1. Urinate before and after sex

If you consult a urology doctor, this is one of the things you will be advised to do to prevent a urinary tract infection. Note that sexual activity allows bacteria to get into the urethra. To reduce this risk, it is advisable to urinate before and after sexual intercourse constantly.

This will go a long way in flushing out bacteria that can cause a UTI. In addition, ensure you keep the genital area clean before and after sex to get rid of bacteria.

2. Hydrate

Drinking a lot of water is a solution to many issues, including preventing UTI. Talking lots of fluids throughout the day will support flushing out bacteria. Note that the more fluids you take, the more frequently you will urinate. This means that if there is looming bacteria at any point, it will be flushed out.

Try to drink a couple of glasses per day, and you will keep UTI at bay. Other sources of fluids are also acceptable. For instance, you can drink smoothies or fresh fruit juices.

3. Avoid scented feminine products

Scented feminine products are not recommended. Often the consequences affect the PH balance of the vagina, creating a conducive environment for the bacteria to grow. When harmful bacteria overgrows, it results in yeast infections, bacteria vaginosis, and UTIs.

It would be best to avoid scented pads, douches, deodorant sprays, and scented bath oils.

4. Wipe front to back

Note that the rectum hosts E.coli. Bringing the bacteria to the urethra is risky, which is why you are advised to wipe from the front to the back. Brushing your genitals the wrong way could also cause a urinary tract infection.

Note that the risk factor is even higher if you have bowel movement problems like diarrhea. You should maintain hygiene during this time.

5. Reconsider your birth control

Note that hormonal changes can cause UTIs. Certain types of contraception have increased the risk factor for developing urinary tract infections. Spermicide lubricated condoms, diaphragm, and spermicide promote the growth of bacteria.

If your doctor diagnoses these contraceptives as the cause of a UTI, you will be advised to consider other methods.

Take away

While blocking the probability of developing a UTI may be impossible to some extent, prevention is vital. UTI symptoms can be unpleasant and can develop into more severe complications. The tips above will help you prevent UTIs in your life!
